Corn Rootworm Larval Injury Early and Impressive in Some Locations
Reports continue to arrive about early corn rootworm larval injury, and we anticipate receiving an increase in reports this season from northwestern Illinois. Such evidence points to a continued westward spread by this pest. more

First Captures of Japanese Beetles in Illinois in 2004
Everyone in Illinois needs to now be on the alert for emergence of Japanese beetles, whether they have appeared in your area previously or not. The worst infestations often occur in areas where the pest wasn't expected. more

Heads-Up (or Heads-Down) on European Corn Borer
Moth flights of European corn borer seem to be on the rise, and some larval feeding is being seen in fields of knee-high corn. Be sure to scout cornfields. more

Reports of Armyworm Injury Continue
Reports of armyworm have expanded beyond southern Illinois. Scout wheat, corn, rye, and grass pastures. Preharvest intervals are noted for insecticides applied to cereal/small grains. more

Soybean Aphids Detected in Widely Scattered Iowa Soybean Fields
Though we have not confirmed any soybean aphid infestations in Illinois, their appearance in some areas of Iowa leads us to anticipate Illinois reports shortly. more

Some Significant Grasshopper Activity Noted
Grasshopper injury has been observed in both corn and soybean fields in Illinois. The two schools of thought on grasshopper management are detailed, and insecticides suggested for control of grasshopper are outlined. more

What's in Your Weeds? Part I
Stem-boring insects have caused increasing damage in the last three years, with stalk borer larvae and Dectes stem borer being common culprits. Little is yet known about their habits and life cycles or about the role of weeds as stem-boring insect hosts; surveys and research are ongoing. more
