First Black Cutworm of the Season Caught
Ron Hines has caught the first black cutworm moth of the season, in Pulaski County on March 23. Hines will also be monitoring for European corn borer, southwestern corn borer, corn earworms, fall armyworms, and Japanese beetles. more

Iowa State University Entomologists Publish Survey Results on "Practices and Perceptions" of Farmers Regarding Transgenic Corn
Results are discussed of a 2001 survey on producers' perceptions about using transgenic hybrids to control European corn borers and corn rootworms. The current low densities of European corn borers in many areas of Illinois mean that non-Bt hybrids remain an option this season, assuming farmers will scout fields and apply rescue treatments as appropriate. more

Weed Control in Winter Wheat
Illinois wheat has weathered winter reasonably well, and producers may soon be considering weed control strategies. Wild garlic is troublesome in wheat; its characteristics and control options are detailed. Herbicides usable in small grains and their effectiveness are also outlined. more
